Census Returns
An important source for family and local history.
The census has been taken virtually every 10 years since 1801. The census taken between the years 1801-1831 was a basic headcount of the population. In 1841 the first modern census was taken. The census recorded all present at a specific address on a particular night, including servants, lodgers, relatives and others. A census was also taken for institutions such as workhouses, prisons and asylums.
After 1851 more precise details were given about individuals. Information included where your ancestors lived, their occupation, marital status, relationship to head of household, when and where born and details of parents, children and siblings. From 1891 there was a record of whether Welsh or English was the spoken language, or both. There was also a section on the return to include medical disabilities.
